week 5 - feed back and Presentation Skills

We have receive our feedback and as we have suspected it was quite bad, we only got a grade D. The only thing that is positive in our feedback is that we have a render 3D shape examples and using Prezi for our presentation. The feedback on the pitch is that our group lacked of energy and enthusiasm, insufficient of detail and concept wasn't clear.

This week an external lecturer Paul come to talk to us about how to present a good presentation. We have learn new things about presenting from the lecture. Me and Rob had a meeting with Brian after the session. Brian and Nick have come up with another idea "Augmented Reality" that they have both discuss after the presentation last week. For this idea we will still create architectural shapes in 3D Max then get a few early learning building blocks and put marker on each piece. Then use AR tool Kit and Virtual or Flash as the software to pick up the marker from the web camera and then display the 3D model over the block. So on the screen there will be the real world 3D block that is build by us will be over the real world block and user can rotate around (but the marker need to be seen by the camera) and interact with the real world block. Brian have show us an example of the Augmented Reality using Flash. We have a quick research on the Augmented Reality after the meeting with Brian. There are some interesting examples of Augmented Reality out there.

Rob and I have come out with some important problems that our group will face if we are going to the Augmented Reality route:

  1. None of the member in our group know anything about Augmented Reality.
  2. After the quick research we found out that Augmented Reality need a few tool kit and programs. It also involves a lot of coding and scripting as well as knowledge in game engine.
  3. In the real world each pieces of the block will be stack up and the marker need to face the camera. So if the marker of the block is been block and not pick up by the camera then it will not show the model. So user are only allow to build a single building just the front part and not all the building.
Brian also suggested us to schedule a meeting with Nick Cope who has some experience in this field. And both us Me and Rob decided to keep this idea cause it sound interesting. If after meeting with Nick and feel like it is unrealistic then we will lean back to the Tumbling Tower Activity.

Presentation Week 4

Last week our group have a few meetings for the presentation and our project. Over the week end of last week we all have done the presentations. Rob have sign up a free online storage (Mediafire.com) so that we can upload our file and share between the group. I have done the presentation and have discuss with my group mates. I have got the feedback from them and improved the presentation slides.

On Wednesday 20th of Oct our group have deliver the the pitch "3D Activity and Design Project". We have got a negative feedback and the idea is actually be rejected. This is because it is not a physical product it is a design. In the proposal the product will be made by portland stone which is not likely to able to build it. We have a few discussion with client about the alternative paths of the product. Brian who is one of our client give us an idea about Jenga Activity, in 3D. For this idea the building pieces will be build and import in to a game engine. Then build a building using the pieces that is build and using the existing Portland Stone building as a reference. This would mean that most of our research that we have done so far can be use for the game ("Tumbling Tower Activity").

Our group have a meeting after the pitch and decided that we will follow the Tumbling Tower Activity idea and will work on it. Searching games engines and etc. We will also wait for the feedback from the client and will start from there.

Week 3

Two talker come to talk for this week class. Talk about how to have own business and the projector mapping.
I found it interesting listening to how to start own business.

On the 07th of Oct our group have a meeting about the propose project idea that we are going to proposed on the 20th of Oct. We have come to a point that we have all agree to do a design proposal. It is something like a early learning centre blocks that children can stack up the blocks and build their own building..

Each of us will design an individual items and will be made from actual Portland Stone, and could be place in the Tout Quarry. So the user can be interact with it. This building block can let the visitor to interact with it and build their own artifact of Portland Stone and Sculpture. At the end we have discuss every one will have some task to do over the week before the second meeting.

I was assign to look into which building (both in Leeds and Other area) that uses Portland Stone, as well as beginning to research different shape and designs the structure of it..

I have look into a few building that is build using the portland stone.

This is the British Museum in London. It is build using Portland Stone
This is the University College London Main Building. It is located at the end of Grafton Way. It is another Portland Stone Structure.

St. Paul Cathedral, London

This is the first purpose- built broadcast centre in the UK. The BBC Building - Broadcasting House.

For the considerations that I have look into are:
Highlight Issue:

  1. Wide Demographic
  2. Legal Issue
  3. Ethical Issue

     Wide Demographic

  • Target audience from age 5 - 80

    Legal Issues
  • Plagiarism of the product
  • extention of the sculpture idea combining the activity and arts.
     Ethical Issue
  • product propose.
  • The material of the product (build by portland stone)

Early Consideration:

  1. Health and Safety
  2. Idea
      Health and Safety
  • The product is design to be made by portland stone so it cannot be too big & sharp. This is because it is the target audience is from age 5 so it is dangerous.
  • Limit the pieces that is on display table or limit the display cabinate
  • Warning sign! ( to warn the children or the parent )
     Idea
  • The design product will be design in 3D max and will be made by portland stone
  • Designed with a stone sculptor

We have a few meeting this week. We discuss our initial task and also looked at the information we gathered. I have show what I have found and also the considerations and issue that our group will be facing. In the meeting Rob show us what he have found and I used the picture that he took from Leeds Town and build some examples of the pillar and arc. We also decide that each of us will do our own presentation and talk about what we have found and each of us have about 2 and a half minutes - 3 minutes to talk about our slide.

These are some easy model that I have done for next week presentation. These model is a draft model it is not a final model so it is not really good looking.  I am doing my presentation slide as well for my part. I am using perzi for my presentation. It is a good tool for presentation. I have also include the Highlight Issue, Early Considerations and also how are we going to present the final product.

Collaborative practice

This is my First blog that I have done. This blog is for tracking of what I have done and what I need to do for my course (Collaborative Practice). I was in a group of 3 people named group 7.
Jonathan Wong (me)
Chris
Rob
We meet at the first day of the course started. We were put into a group of about 7 people with different ideas and different background. Then the other group mates left us, some have join the other group and some have made their own group. Three of us think that we should stick together and get some thing done. So we meet up as long as we got time and brain storm of what we got to do for our group project. The first idea was the 3D Puzzle Game but it doesn't have much details and though of how to do. Then we talk to the lecturer and get some idea from them.
